| Animal Haven FAQ's
Tell us about the changes at Animal Haven. Animal Haven restructured, which means we closed our sanctuary in South Kortright (upstate New York) and our facility in Flushing. We operate out of our Manhattan facility, offering adoptable pets at this location and via our mobile adoption van.
When did these facilities close? Our sanctuary upstate closed to the public on December 31, 2008 and the Flushing facility closed March 1, 2009.
What happened to the animals at the closed locations? We worked with local rescue and animal welfare organizations to take as many of our adoptable cats and dogs as they could, and made them available for adoption, while other adoptable animals were relocated to our Manhattan facility or placed in other animal welfare organizations around the country.
Isn’t Animal Haven a "No Kill" agency? Animal Haven’s philosophy is not to euthanize for space or time, nor euthanize what we determine are healthy and treatable animals.
Tell us about Animal Haven. Animal Haven is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area, and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption. Founded in 1967, we operate a limited admission shelter/adoption center in Manhattan and mobile adoption van. We also provide programs that enhance the bond between animals and people.
Animal Haven continues to be a “limited admissions” shelter, which means that we only take in animals that we have appropriate space and resources to care for. Animals currently in our care that are not healthy or treatable for transfer or adoption may be humanely euthanized.
There are few organizations with the money and facilities to keep an animal that is ill or unsafe around people.
